Good News!FAMILY ART FOR ALL AGES-HAPPY PAINTING The students in grades 1 to 8 will enjoy the program, Family Art for All Ages. Through a generous donation from Communications Test Design, Inc., every student will receive his/her own personal art kit. The students will learn about the brief history of oil painting, cleaning and precautions, painting preparation, paint brushes, and painting tips. There are five lessons incorporated into the program that span the school year. Students will learn to follow directions step-by-step to achieve the best learning experience. After each lesson, students will incorporate writing as part of the literacy program. In May, there will be a graduation day, prizes and an art show for the parents. RACE FOR EDUCATION On November 15, 2006, Archbishop Ryan School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children joined the students at Saint Gabriel’s Elementary School in the Race for Education Program. The students sent out letters to their families and friends and requested that they sponsor them to jog in this event. The activity serves to arouse the curiosity of students to continue to consider jogging as part of a healthy life style. Race for Education supports the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Wellness Program. Hopefully, our students will be encouraged to make this a part of their daily routine. PHILLY DAY AT ARCHBISHOP RYAN On November 13, 2006, the Montessori class of Norwood Fontbonne Academy visited the Total Communication Academy. The Archbishop Ryan students taught our visitors American Sign Language for numbers, colors, animals, food and basic greetings. All of the students had an opportunity to play various board games such as chess, checkers, and dominoes. They had an opportunity to enjoy and share stories at lunch. The Archbishop Ryan students presented our guests with a PHILLY BAG, which included a soft pretzel and a package of their favorite TaskyKakes. COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS Our students will participate in Community Service Opportunities this school year as sponsored by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. In September, our students collected jars of peanut butter and jelly for the food bank They enthusiastically responded to the call to reach out to help others in need. As the year progresses, our students will become involved in other projects to help their community in the Catholic tradition. BOOK IT Archbishop Ryan School has signed up to be a part of BOOK IT. This program is sponsored by Pizza Hut and encourages reading among school age students. The company offers incentives to students as they read a specific number of books. Our students will sign a pledge to increase the number of books they read this year. They also have to show evidence that they read the book by submitting a graphic organizer summarizing the main idea. The teachers will chart the progress of each student and the class. The principal will offer incentives for every five books a student reads . BRING YOUR TEDDY BEAR TO SCHOOL ***Bring Your Teddy Bear to School Day will be held on October 31, 2006. Students in Pre School, kindergarten, first grade and second grade will bring their teddy bear to school. Older students will read/sign a short book to the younger students and include the Teddy Bear. Healthy snacks will be served afterwards. SCHOOL WIDE WORDS OF THE MONTH The students will integrate faith into their daily lives at Archbishop Ryan School. The Word of the Month reflects the virtue we expect to develop within our students. FIRST MOVE Our school will participate in the First Move Program. First Move is a complete curriculum developed by the America’s Foundation of Chess. The purpose of the program will be to building math problem solving skills, reading comprehension and self esteem. The students and staff are excited about the program. Chess instruction will take place one day a week for 45 minutes for students in grades 2 through 8. World Community Grid Project Martin E.
